International Memorial Board Statetment<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

On\u00a028\u00a0December 2021\u00a0Russia’s\u00a0Supreme Court ruled to\u00a0close International Memorial.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit, filed by\u00a0the Prosecutor General’s\u00a0Office, referred to a\u00a0missing ‘foreign agent’ designation on\u00a0some of\u00a0the materials produced by\u00a0International Memorial. This is\u00a0only a\u00a0formal pretext, though, and the court hearings showed that these allegations were groundless.<\/p>\n

It\u00a0was today when the real reason was revealed in\u00a0the court. Prosecutor General’s\u00a0Office representatives have stated that we\u00a0are treating Russia’s\u00a0Soviet-period history in a\u00a0wrong way, ‘creating a\u00a0falsified image of\u00a0the USSR as a\u00a0terrorist state’ and ‘levelling criticism against the state authorities.’ It\u00a0appears that our opponents see the state as\u00a0being exempt from all criticism.<\/p>\n

The decision of\u00a0the Supreme Court has confirmed once again that the history of\u00a0political terror organised and driven by\u00a0the state has not remained a\u00a0matter of a\u00a0purely academic interest in\u00a0Russia. Instead, it is a\u00a0heated issue of\u00a0immediate concern. Our country needs to\u00a0make sense, in an\u00a0honest and fair manner,\u00a0of\u00a0its Soviet past; this is a\u00a0necessary requirement for Russia’ s\u00a0future. It\u00a0seems absurd to\u00a0believe that the shutdown of\u00a0International Memorial removes this issue from the agenda. Memory of\u00a0the tragedies of\u00a0the past is\u00a0necessary for the entire society in\u00a0Russia and beyond. Remembrance of\u00a0state terror unites all the former Soviet republics.<\/p>\n

We\u00a0will certainly appeal against the Supreme Court decision using all means available to us. We\u00a0will also find legal ways of\u00a0continuing our work. Memorial is\u00a0more than an\u00a0organisation, even more than a\u00a0just public movement. Memorial is\u00a0the need felt by\u00a0Russians to\u00a0know the truth about our country’s\u00a0tragic past and the fate of\u00a0millions of\u00a0victims. There is no-one who is\u00a0capable of\u00a0liquidating that need.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
