Since the late 1800s, it has been home to tens of thousands of Dungans, a predominantly Muslim people hailing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/02549948.1990.11731222\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from China<\/a> whose language resembles some Mandarin dialects but is written in Cyrillic script. The Dungans first arrived in Central Asia in the bloody aftermath of an unsuccessful revolt, and they managed to preserve their language and culture under Imperial Russian and Soviet rule. According to RFE\/RL, there are roughly 120,000 Dungans scattered across the former USSR today.\u00a0For those living in the Ch\u00fcy Valley, a haunting anniversary is coming up: in February 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rferl.org\/a\/death-toll-in-ethnic-clashes-in-kazakhstan-s-south-rises-to-11\/30432344.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ethnic violence<\/a> between Dungans and Kazakhs in the Jambyl region claimed 11 lives and led thousands of people to seek refuge with relatives across the border in Kyrgyzstan. Many of those who fled soon returned home, but a deep-seated sense of insecurity remains, nearly three years on. In a dispatch for The Beet, Meduza in English\u2019s senior news editor <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SamBreazeale2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sam Breazeale<\/a> reports on how life has changed for the Ch\u00fcy Valley\u2019s Dungans since the 2020 clashes.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"SimpleBlock-module_p__Q3azD SimpleBlock-module_center__2rjif\">In early February 2020, after two <a href=\"https:\/\/tengrinews.kz\/kazakhstan_news\/nazvana-prichina-kordayskogo-konflikta-390996\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unrelated<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/rus.azattyq.org\/a\/dungan-incident-just-kazakhstan-s-latest-interethnic-violence\/30428012.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confrontations<\/a> between Dungans and Kazakhs in the Qordai district in southeastern Kazakhstan, calls to \u201cstand up to the Dungans\u201d and other <a href=\"https:\/\/adcmemorial.org\/en\/articles\/korday-pogrom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">xenophobic<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/pdmnews.ru\/9615\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rhetoric<\/a> began spreading rapidly online. On the evening of February 7, about 30 Kazakhs instigated a brawl with roughly the same number of Dungans, according to the human rights group ADC Memorial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"SimpleBlock-module_p__Q3azD SimpleBlock-module_center__2rjif\">Within hours, <a href=\"https:\/\/tengrinews.kz\/kazakhstan_news\/v-massovoy-drake-v-masanchi-uchastvovali-300-chelovek-390922\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hundreds<\/a> of Kazakhs from other towns and villages arrived at the scene, along with various local authorities and community members. By the following morning, Kazakhs had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/ru\/%D0%BD%D0%B0-%D1%8E%D0%B3%D0%B5-%D0%BA%D0%B0%D0%B7%D0%B0%D1%85%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%B0-%D0%B2%D1%81%D0%BF%D1%8B%D1%85%D0%BD%D1%83%D0%BB-%D0%BA%D0%BE%D0%BD%D1%84%D0%BB%D0%B8%D0%BA%D1%82-%D0%BC%D0%B5%D0%B6%D0%B4%D1%83-%D0%BA%D0%B0%D0%B7%D0%B0%D1%85%D0%B0%D0%BC%D0%B8-%D0%B8-%D0%B4%D1%83%D0%BD%D0%B3%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%B0%D0%BC%D0%B8\/a-52302954\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shot at<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/rus.azattyq.org\/a\/kazakhstan-zhambyl-region-conflict-\/30423627.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">burned<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/kaktus.media\/doc\/405657_on_hotel_pomirit_tolpy_no_ne_vernylsia._v_kazahstane_pohoronili_pogibshih.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">looted<\/a> numerous Dungan homes and businesses. Eyewitnesses <a href=\"https:\/\/adcmemorial.org\/en\/articles\/korday-pogrom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> that police officers watched passively and even ran from the attackers as the violence spread to other villages nearby.
