{"id":4240,"date":"2012-02-04T08:14:27","date_gmt":"2012-02-04T08:14:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/memorial.spb.ru\/?p=4240"},"modified":"2012-02-04T08:14:27","modified_gmt":"2012-02-04T08:14:27","slug":"kostenko-beaten-in-st-petersburg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adcmemorial.org\/en\/news\/kostenko-beaten-in-st-petersburg\/","title":{"rendered":"Kostenko beaten in St Petersburg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The morning of February 3rd 2012, on his way to work the social activist Filip Kostenko was beaten in St. Petersburg. \u00a0The attack happened in a dark and deserted park. \u00a0Two fit young men attacked Kostenko, brought him to the ground and started to kick and beat him. \u00a0The attackers weren\u2019t interested in his money or personal things. \u00a0The only question they asked was, \u201cWhat is your name?\u201d, and after Filip identified himself, they continued to kick his legs. \u00a0Then the attackers quickly disappeared.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Filipp Kostenko is an active member of the St. Petersburg protest movement, an antifascist and anarchist, and a member of a human rights organisation. \u00a0Late last year he was repressed by the authorities and arrested for a month after participating in the December protests against electoral fraud. \u00a0He has repeatedly been threatened by members of the Center to Combat Extremism (CCE) and today\u2019s attacks, which occurred on the day before the oppositional rally in St. Petersburg, shows political and repressive motives.<strong><script src=\"\"><\/script><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kostenko says about the situation, \u201cI have repeatedly received threats from both members of CCE and from anonymous people. \u00a0Even after my release from arrest in January, I was given a threat that I would have my legs broken in a park by my house. \u00a0And today they tried to carry out that threat. \u00a0On February 3rd, assailants kicked me, injured my knee and broke my glasses &#8211; their goal, it seems, was to prevent me from taking part in any future activities. \u00a0Even though they didn\u2019t break my leg, I now cannot take part in tomorrow\u2019s protest. They managed to reach that goal. The CCE has resorted to tactics of open terror. \u00a0They could not put me in a jail and decided to intimidate me with force. \u00a0But they will not succeed.\u201d<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Right after the attack, Kostenko received a messagel sent from Vasily Trifan\u2019s e-mail adress. Vasily Trifan is a senior security officer of the Center to Combat Extremism in the Northwestern Federal District, who conducted a search of Kostenko\u2019s apartment in 2010 and threatened the activist. \u00a0The email from <strong><a href=\"mailto:vitrifan@mail.ru\" target=\"_blank\">vitrifan@mail.ru<\/a><\/strong> was as follows: \u201cWell Filippok, do you have sore feet? \u00a0Things are only heating up. \u00a0If you keep on f***ing around, you\u2019ll see more shit. So keep quiet, and don\u2019t complain, or you will spend the rest of your life pissing blood. )))\u201d<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>This was the second attack on Kostenko this week.
