{"id":7842,"date":"2013-09-30T17:14:23","date_gmt":"2013-09-30T13:14:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adcmemorial.org\/?p=7842"},"modified":"2013-10-23T11:10:25","modified_gmt":"2013-10-23T07:10:25","slug":"ales-bialiatski-receives-highly-symbolic-vaclav-havel-human-rights-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adcmemorial.org\/en\/news\/ales-bialiatski-receives-highly-symbolic-vaclav-havel-human-rights-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"Ales Bialiatski receives highly symbolic V\u00e1clav Havel Human Rights Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Paris-Minsk, 30 septembre 2013 \u2013 <strong>As the Council of Europe just announced the 2013 laureate of the <a href=\"http:\/\/assembly.coe.int\/vaclav-havel-human-rights-prize\/default.asp\">V\u00e1clav Havel Human Rights Prize<\/a>, FIDH and Human Rights Centre \u201cViasna\u201d express their utmost support to its recipient Ales Bialiatski, President of HRC \u201cViasna\u201d and Vice President of FIDH. <a href=\"http:\/\/freeales.fidh.net\/introducing-ales-bialiatski\/\">Prominent human rights defender in Belarus,<\/a> Ales Bialiatski was sentenced to 4 and a half years of detention in severe regime in August 2011 for his human rights activities<\/strong>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0<em>This prize is particularly symbolic for Ales<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb, explained <strong>Valiantsin Stefanovic<\/strong>, vice-president of Viasna. \u00ab <em>Vaclav Havel and Bialiatski met, and a few days before he died, V\u00e1clav Havel wrote a letter to Ales in prison. In it, he expressed his support to Ales and the hope that Belarus would one day be a democratic state\u00a0<script src=\"\"><\/script><\/em>\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Ales, who celebrated his 51st birthday behind bars on 25 September, has dedicated the past twenty years to the defence of human rights not only in Belarus but also abroad. The 38th FIDH Congress which was held in May 2013 in Istanbul demonstrated its support and its faith in Ales and <a href=\"http:\/\/freeales.fidh.net\/2013\/05\/ales-bialiatski-reelected-fidh-vice-president\/\">re-elected him Vice President of FIDH<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Together with his organisation in Belarus, Human Rights Centre \u201cViasna\u201d which he founded in 1996, Ales has been bringing support to political prisoners and their families.
