Memorial participates in the session of UN committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

On May 9-13 the ADC Memorial with the support of FIDH participated in the preparation of the regular session of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in Geneva.

During the session on May 2-20, 2011 the 5th report of the Russian Federation on observance of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights was discussed. Analysing the reports of state members the experts of the Committee ask the state representatives about the most important problems. To study deeper the state of affairs in the country, the UN experts also analyse alternative reports, listen to the opinions of the representatives of NGOs in the state-member.

The ADC “Memorial” has already presented its report “Discrimination of ethnic minorities and migrants in regard of their socio-economic rights” (supported by FIDH and written on the grounds of the Memorial practice). The workers of the ADC Memorial together with other Russian NGOs presented information on realisation of socio-economic rights of the vulnerable groups (migrants, Roma people, stateless persons).

We hope that relevant recommendations will be included in the final comments of the work of the Committee and will be considered in the later law system and practice of the Russian Federation.
