Today the coal industry is the dirtiest way of producing energy and presents a major threat to the climate. Coal combustion is the single largest source of carbon dioxide emissions. And another greenhouse gas – methane – is released when coal is mined. So coal is the “dirtiest” fossil fuel and the most dangerous source of energy for the climate system.
