The Council of Europe adopted the Strasbourg Declaration on Roma

Strasbourg, 20 October 2010 – Representatives from 47 countries of the Council of Europe have adopted the “Strasbourg Declaration” on Roma.

The document contains an “unequivocal condemnation of racism, stigmatization, and hate speech directed against Roma, particularly in public and political discourse.” The Council also called for “measures to foster knowledge of the culture, history, and languages of Roma and understanding thereof.”

A first progress report on the implementation of the Strasbourg Declaration goals will be presented at a conference in Istanbul in May 2011.
