Brussels, Cinéma Aventure,
15th of January – 7pm

The screening of the new documentary film NENETS VS GAS – THE LAST NOMAD ROUTE IN SIBERIA by Sergio Ghizzardi will be followed by a debate – in English – on the rights of indigenous peoples facing the deployment of energy projects, on discrimination against Indigenous peoples of the North and Siberia, colonized by Russia, whose living environment has been destroyed by extractive industries, and their traditional way of life ruined by pollution.

THE PANELISTS:

  • CÉLINE GROMMERCH, Greenpeace
Céline Grommerch studied law, specializing in human rights, in Liège and Maastricht. She is interested in the links between human beings and nature, and in the work of associations working for the common good. She has worked for various NGOs (2Celsius, The Lifescape Project, PFPI) on several campaigns concerning forest protection and biomass. Since September 2023, she has been working for Greenpeace Belgium in the investigation team, on a report illustrating the various human rights violations caused by gas supplies.
  • STEPHANIA KULAEVA, AВС Memorial
Stephania Kulaeva is an expert of ADC Memorial-Brussels. The Antidiscrimination Centre Memorial focuses on  protection of vulnerable groups, minorities, and migrants. Since 2014, ADC Memorial has been working in Eastern Europe and Central Asia from its base in Belgium. Their work is advocating for the rights of the peoples suffering from discrimination including Indigenous peoples of the North and Siberia, colonized by Russia, whose living environment has been destroyed by extractive industries, and their traditional way of life ruined by pollution.
  • Sergio Ghizzardi, Belgian documentary filmmaker.
Through his films, he speaks of the changing world and the real capacity of men to change their destiny. He tries to get to the heart of the matter, to understand and explain. He is a witness to the political scene in Europe and the changes our continent is undergoing.

In the heart of the Arctic, the Yamal Peninsula is the world’s largest gas production area. 85% of Russian gas comes from Yamal. In Yamal, the NENETS have been migrating from the north to the south of the peninsula for over 200 generations. Can they survive this over-industrialization? As a polar and environmental Western, this film plunges us into the emergence of the Northeast Sea Route and the disappearance of the last Siberian transhumance route. The success of one may mean the extinction of the other.
