17th of May – International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

Homophobia remains a serious problem in the region of Eurasia. It manifests in hate speech by media and public officials; hate crimes that are not properly investigated; repressions against LGBTI by the law enforcement; unacceptable terminology used in the criminal codes of the countries in the region despite decriminalization of consensual same-sex relationship between men.

The most alarming is the situation in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan where criminal prosecution of men having sex with men remains both in practice and in legislation. This year by the 17th of May, ADC Memorial publishes an analytical report about persecution of GBT in these two countries. The research includes a historical overview of the Soviet and post-Soviet legislation regarding criminal prosecution of gays in the region.
